2006-2009: Personal Experiences, Social Media, and Haptic Frontiers
The focus expanded to include user-centric experiences, social interactions, and the integration of haptic (touch) feedback. "Personal Experience Capture" (2006) and "Life Logging" (2006) reflected a growing interest in multimedia as a tool for personal documentation. The rise of social media platforms prompted research into "Social Networking and Collections to Enable Video Semantics Acquisition" (2009) and "Collaborative Tagging of Multimedia" (2008), shifting from traditional content management to community-contributed data.
Haptic interfaces became a distinct research area, with titles like "Haptic User Interfaces for Multimedia Systems" (2006), "Haptic-Enabled Multimodal Interface for the Planning of Hip Arthroplasty" (2006), and even a "Framework for Haptic Broadcasting" (2009). Applications continued to diversify, including "Multimedia in Healthcare" (2007) and "Games in the Classroom" (2009). The initial discussions about "AI" in multimedia were still conceptual, but "Intelligent and Pervasive Multimedia Systems" (2009) began to hint at future directions.
2010-2014: Big Data, 3D, and the Rise of Machine Intelligence
This period marked a significant shift towards handling "Big Data" in multimedia, the proliferation of 3D technologies, and the nascent integration of machine learning approaches. "Big Cross-Modal Social Media Data Analytics" (2010) and "Large-Scale Multimedia Data Collections" (2012) signaled the challenges and opportunities of vast datasets. Visual search became a prominent application, with "Mobile Visual Search" (2011) and "Compact Descriptors for Visual Search" (2014).
3D technologies gained momentum, including "Converting 2D Video to 3D" (2011), "3D Imaging Techniques and Multimedia Applications" (2013), and "Next-Generation 3D Formats with Depth Map Support" (2014). Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE) remained important for streaming, as seen in "Optimizing the Perceptual Quality of Real-Time Multimedia Applications" (2015).
